Meet the Team

Mark Shields

Mark joined the CDC-Zambia team in July 2001 as a Medical Epidemiologist and Informaticist with responsibilities in surveillance, epidemiology, monitoring and evaluation, and information technology.  He is now Chief of Health Informatics and works to improve the Zambia health information systems infrastructure.  His main focus is improving the health of Zambians by providing Technical Assistance to the Ministry of Health in its effort to build and implement the National Electronic Health Records system, now called SmartCare. 

Derrick Muneene

Derrick is SmartCare's Project Manager, managing full circle all aspects of SmartCare.  Before joining the team four years ago, he worked for the USAID|RPM Plus Project, along with Management Sciences for Health, where he was the in-country software developer, lead trainer and program manager for the ART Dispensing Database and integrated VCT-PMTCT Database.  Derrick holds a Bsc with Honors in Computing from Greenwich College, a Diploma in Computer Studies from Evelyn Hone College, a Diploma in Project Management from Cambridge University, and an Advanced Certificate in Teaching Methodology from the Technical Vocational Teachers College in Zambia.  Derrick is also a published author.

Derrick on working for SmartCare:

Irene Pathy

A M.S Bioinformatics Graduate and University Fellow from The Ohio State University, Irene joined Epidemiology and Strategic Information branch of CDC-Global AIDS Program, Zambia in August 2006. As Lead Application Developer for the SmartCare Programme, she is manages the in-country software development team. Her responsibilities include requirements analysis and specification review, consensus of data elements for electronic health records, software design, development and testing of SmartCare modules. Towards national deployment of the SmartCare program, Irene has also been involved in training, field support issue management and developer capacity building. Participant in international conferences(2008 EMR Data Use Workshop in Dar-es-salaam, 2007 Microsoft TechEd Barcelona) Irene continues to hone her skills in medical informatics and project management. 

Bwalya Chiteba

Bwalya is a member of the Project Management team for SmartCare.

Stephen Ngala

Stephen is the IT manager and a member of the Project Management team for SmartCare. Before joining, he worked for ZAMNET, Zambia's ISP, as a senior network engineer.
