Position Summary:
The SQL Team Software Developer will work as part of a large team writing and deploying the SmartCare National Electronic Health Record system in Zambia (http://www.smartcare.org.zm). This is an excellent opportunity for a junior level SQL or database developer to work on a large Microsoft .NET Framework software development project.
Specifically the software developer will develop new features and enhancements to the backend database system (currently MS SQL Server) and will coordinate with specific staff to get these updates completed in a timely manner.
This person will report to the SmartCare Project Manager, via the Software Development Team Lead, on programmatic issues and will report to EGPAF Country Director on administrative issues. This person will have tasks to complete on a daily basis and needs to be able to work as part of a large team.
Essential Responsibilities
- Will develop software reports, re-factor existing code and fix bugs primarily in SQL source code for the SmartCare electronic health records project
- Will develop software specifications for adding new reports in SmartCare
- Will develop/re-use OLAP cubes using the SmartCare reporting framework for aggregate reports
- Will test SQL software developed by own self, other developers or related field issues
- Will provide software/technical documentation and presentations to the development team
Other responsibilities on an as-needed basis:
- Will develop and test Crystal reports
- Will develop and test C# software primarily for the framework that communicates to the database layer using ADO.NET
- Will complete other detailed tasks as assigned possibly including operations analysis.
Skills
- Required
- Database development and querying in T-SQL
- Software development using .NET 2.0, specifically ADO.NET
- Object oriented programming technologies using C# and/or JAVA
- Database maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, SQL code optimization and profiling
- Desired
- Experience working with other database servers such as MySQL, Oracle
- Experience with data transformation, conversion from database servers such as MS Access to SQL Server is highly desirable
- Software development experience in Visual Studio environment using C#
- Knowledge of DOS commands, automated batch processing and scripting languages such as PERL or Python
- Knowledge of crystal reports
Work Experience:
- Required
- At least 2 years experience in database development, T-SQL, ADO.NET
- 2 years prior experience in a similar position; need to have completed significant projects
- Desired
- 5 years or more experience in SQL server DB development, administration and T-SQL
- Experience in complete software development life cycles as part of a team
- Software system design and architect experience
- Strong knowledge of data collection and analysis, including experience with spreadsheets software. Previous monitoring and evaluation preferred
Education:
- Required:
- Bachelors of Science in Computer Science or University degree in related field or equivalent two year certification in computer studies
- Desired:
- Masters of Science in Computer Science and/or Information Systems
- Knowledge and/or experience in Statistics
Professional skills required
- Ability to learn and work fast is more important than number of year’s experience.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks at once; Highly organized and detailed oriented
- Need to work well as part of a team
- Excellent proven communication skills in written and oral English is necessary
